SBA Opens $20 Million Competition for U.S. Small Manufacturers
Small manufacturers working in critical industries have a new opportunity to secure significant funding through the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The SBA Critical Suppliers Prize Competition is offering up to $20 million in total prize awards to help U.S.-based small businesses expand manufacturing capacity and address critical supply-chain gaps.
Individual winners could receive up to $6 million, giving qualified manufacturers an opportunity to fund projects that can quickly increase production or improve efficiency.
What Is the Critical Suppliers Prize Competition?
The program is focused on established small businesses that can strengthen domestic manufacturing and address important supply-chain chokepoints.
Instead of funding early-stage research and development, the competition is intended to help businesses refine, accelerate, and scale existing solutions.
Businesses must propose projects that provide tangible results in at least one of three priority areas:
- Advanced Metals Manufacturing — including precision casting and forging, rapid tooling, critical minerals, rare-earth recovery, and magnet production.
- Advanced Materials Manufacturing — including large-format additive manufacturing and materials transformation.
- Energy Systems, Energetics and Components — including nuclear energy, battery energy storage systems, and standardization efforts.
How Much Money Is Available?
The SBA plans to award up to $20 million through the competition.
The agency expects to select approximately four to six winners, with individual prizes of up to $6 million each.
The awards are non-dilutive, meaning businesses do not have to give the SBA an ownership stake in exchange for the prize funding.
Who Is Eligible?
Applicants must meet several requirements.
Among them, businesses must:
- Qualify as a U.S.-based small business under SBA size standards.
- Be profitable and demonstrate general creditworthiness.
- Be in good standing on federal obligations.
- Be in good standing in their state of organization.
- Have senior management team members who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and at least 18 years old.
- Be capable of putting the funds to work quickly.
- Demonstrate measurable increases in production or improvements in production efficiency within six months of receiving an award.
Award proceeds also cannot be used for general business overhead.
What Should Businesses Submit?
There is no entry fee.
The SBA suggests that businesses submit their proposal as a company pitch deck explaining the company, its operating history, current capital needs, how the prize money would be used, and the measurable impact the project could have.
The SBA also recommends including information about financial performance, other sources of capital, expected milestones, revenue forecasts, and business references.
Businesses can review the complete eligibility requirements, judging criteria, suggested pitch-deck format, and competition details on the SBA Critical Suppliers Prize Competition page.
The official SBA Critical Suppliers Prize Competition Guidelines are also available for businesses preparing a submission.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted by August 28, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
The SBA is accepting submissions by email rather than through a separate online application form.
Submit your application to: investinnovate@sba.gov
Before submitting, applicants should review the official competition page and guidelines carefully to make sure they meet all eligibility and submission requirements.
Why This Opportunity Matters
Access to capital can be a major obstacle for small manufacturers trying to increase production.
For an established company with the technology, customers, and operating history already in place, an award of several million dollars could help accelerate expansion without requiring the owners to give up equity.
The SBA is specifically looking for businesses capable of producing measurable results quickly, so this opportunity may be particularly attractive to manufacturers that already have an expansion plan but need additional capital to execute it.
